Sydney Airport wished to incorporate a vehicle impounding scheme into their existing AIRDAT Onboard Assurance system. They wanted to promote higher standards, discourage equipment dumping and improve airside safety. AIRDAT’s Onboard and VISA systems were already in place to flag vehicle and equipment defects and Sydney Airport requested that we expand our existing software offering, creating a bespoke impound register.

With Sydney Airport’s requirements forming the basis of the new software, AIRDAT created a new impound feature designed to drive compliance and raise fleet standards for airports. The new tool integrated seamlessly with existing technology. Sydney Airport’s fleet managers utilised the familiar VISA app to scan vehicles or equipment to be impounded while Onboard recorded all communication and issued warnings and charges.
Onboard software allowed users to define workflows, set charges and send notifications to relevant parties whilst recording all data on the impounding process for compliance purposes.

Sydney Airport’s Airport Operating Licence (AOL) was introduced to govern the standards which airport stakeholders are required to comply with when operating on airport. As part of these requirements, Sydney Airport uses AIRDAT Onboard to register all airside vehicles and non-motorised equipment. All registration permits are equipped with a QR code, allowing operations and compliance staff to use AIRDAT VISA app to scan the vehicle or equipment and raise a defect.
The AOL established provisions to allow Sydney Airport to impound Ground Service Equipment (GSE) and charge impound fees, in instances where it posed a risk to safety or operational efficiency and was not removed on request by the owner. To facilitate this, Sydney Airport identified and approached AIRDAT with a solution to leverage and enhance the vehicle management capabilities of Onboard and Visa to create an impound register and communicate with owners the equipment status and associated impound fees. Recognising the potential of such a function for airports, AIRDAT partnered with Sydney Airport in the development and delivery of the Impound Feature. The function was built to meet Sydney Airport’s requirements whilst also maintaining flexibility that it can apply to other airports – Nathan McIntosh, Senior Manager Operations Standards & Strategy, Sydney Airport.
