Luton Airport safety

focus revolutionise Airside Driving with AIRDAT

The Challenge

2015 saw Luton Airport’s astounding levels of passenger growth needing a provider that could meet with the demand of the teams and fleet supporting their aircraft movements – but build on the high standards already outlined by their internal teams.  The remit would cover every airside company, driver and fleet item, so it was vital for them to select a provider they could place their trust in.

“Luton Airport’s rollout was a big project for us.  With the solution touching on so many departments, systems and users, we had to get things right to prevent any impact on the operation.

Chris Harvey, Training Director - AIRDAT

The Solution

AIRDAT worked with the airfield team to refresh and renew training materials.  Putting their own on-site training team in place and sourcing the facilities, vehicles and equipment needed to deliver highly engaging world-leading training.  Driver records, Course booking, Testing, Permit Issue and Reporting were moved to AIRDAT’s Passport System.  Following this, AIRDAT worked with Luton’s MT department to configure and deliver ‘Onboard’ – our Assurance & Fleet Management system, as well as provide audit services for complete life cycle management.

Luton’s new assurance scheme was captured and built into Onboard, with their vehicle permit application digitised and ready to accept submissions.  A dedicated application pre-vetting and risk assessment team worked with the airport to outline the standard of submissions that should be accepted.

AIRDAT Passport was configured to map out the Luton training process, including eLearning pre-requisite courses and management for ADP, Manoeuvring Area, Runway, Free-ranging and RT skills.

VISA was activated for the Luton team, with all-new driver and vehicle permits embedded with a secure QR code, ready to be scanned via the app to improve remote audit and safety.

Adjustments to the system were made to accommodate Luton’s unique billing process for vehicle permitting and lost passes.

Our onsite training team drafted new courses with new assets (including live-action video and 3D animations) and sourced and configured the facilities, vehicles and equipment required to deliver world-leading

Our project team attended on-site to provide planning, support and training to the Luton Airport management team and to key stakeholders within the airport community.

The Result

As the airside community grew, demand in all areas was met.  This ensured a stable operation was maintained.  Processes have been streamlined to minimise unnecessary administration time, whilst providing greater levels of transparency and audit.  Luton Airport safety is now at its highest whilst they maintain some of the lowest incident rates of any airport similar in size.

“The AIRDAT team rose to the challenges we placed on them in each area of the business.  Knowing we have these areas managed by them takes a huge amount of pressure off our internal resources – whilst providing the confidence things will be done right”
