In the second day of UK airspace closure due to the volcanic ash hazard flowing across from iceland, the latest reports state it is unlikely that flights will resume until Saturday the 17th at the earliest. Volcanic ash can cause a catastrophic failure of aircraft engines if ingested, hence the measures being taken by NATS and the CAA.
Airside Driving Training continued at London Gatwick today, Dave Perry who headed up the course stated 'It is quite surreal! I think I passed about 4 other vehicles during our tour of the airport. It allowed us more time to talk over how things work on the airside roads, but when things start up again for the new drivers, the difference may come as a slight shock!'
Later in the day, whilst assisting the airport, we managed to get a picture of Dave taking a stroll along Gatwicks main runway 08R. A unique photo at that time of day, but with the losses being incurred by airlines and the industry, we are keen to ensure it remains a 'one off'!
If you are waiting for operations to resume, check your ADP license! We are still operating, so now is the time to renew if necessary.
